House of Representatives to vote on nursing home Bed Tax TODAY!

House moves to follow Senate’s lead and repeal tax on seniors

In 2003, the Provider Specific Tax (Bed Tax) was adopted to help fund Washington’s long-term care industry. As a result of the Bed Tax, seniors spent their assets down faster, pushing them toward Medicaid.

Unfortunately, facilities like the Caroline Kline Galland received less than they paid out. Funds are distributed back to facilities based on the number of Medicaid patients and not on the total number of residents who have been taxed.

Last year, the Legislature passed legislation to phase out the nursing home Bed Tax. With Washington’s economy looking up, isn’t it time to end this unconscionable tax on Washington’s seniors?

Please ask your State Representatives and Governor Gregoire to support a full repeal of this immoral tax.

Please support a repeal of the Nursing Home Bed Tax, SB 6368. Since 2003 Washington has taxed nursing homes on the number of residents per day they have. In most case, this tax has been passed on to private pay residents. This tax effectively punishes seniors who have saved their whole life for nursing care. By continuing this tax, it is harder for seniors to avoid spending down their assets. Ultimately, they may end up on Medicaid. Isn’t it time we repeal this immoral tax on Washington’s seniors?
