What: Judaism, Adoption, and Assisted Reproduction

Who: Stephanie Weiner

When: October 9th: 7-9pm

Where: Stroum Jewish Community Center, Mercer Island

Cost: $10

STARS/Clock Hours: 2    

Description: How many times were you asked to draw a family tree as a child? What about a timeline of major life events or a report about your culture or heritage? Learn how these common assignments can be challenging for adopted children and families who have chosen assisted reproduction.  We will discuss various solutions to these challenges.

Instructor Bio: Stephanie Weiner is a Jewish adoptee who has been engaged in adoption issues for 22 years.

What: The Longest Hate: An Exploration of Anti-Semitism

Who: Robert Herschkowitz

When: October 11th: 7:30-9:30pm         

Where: The Summit at First Hill

Cost: $10

STARS/Clock Hours: 2    

Description: This class will explore the history of anti-Semitism. Using a dramatic PowerPoint format, Herschkowitz, a child survivor, walks students through anti-Semitism both visually and through moving stories.

Instructor Bio: Bob Herschkowitz has a MS in Mechanical Engineering, a MA in Naval History and International Relations and is a retired Boeing aerospace engineer as well as a retired Commander from the US Naval Reserves.

What: STARS 20-Hour Basics Class – The Jewish Version

Who: Tammy Kaiser

Where: Seattle Hebrew Academy

Cost: $150 (fully reimbursable by STARS)

STARS Hours: 20

Description: This basic childcare training class is required for all child care center lead teachers, program supervisors and directors. What makes this class different? It’s Jewish!

Instructor Bio: Tammy Kaiser, M.Ed., ECE, CDA, is the director of Adult Jewish Learning at the Jewish Education Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle.

What: Beresheit: The Story Behind the Stories

Who: Hodaya Hoffman

When: Oct. 23rd, 30th, Nov. 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th, Dec. 4th, 11th: 7-8:30pm

Where: Sephardic Bikur Holim Congregation

Cost: $50 for all eight weeks

STARS/Clock Hours: 1.5 per class = 12 total

Description: This class will offer an in-depth understanding of Chumash Beresheit.

Instructor Bio: Hodaya Hoffman holds a teaching certification and license to practice psychology in Israel. Hoffman is a published author and veteran educator. She is a native Hebrew speaker.

What: Torahthon 5768: Judaism, Ethics, and Human Relationships 

When: October 24th, 31st, November 7th, 14th: 7:15-9:30pm

Where: Herzl Ner-Tamid

Cost: $15 per evening $40 for the series

STARS/Clock Hours: 2 per night – 8 total     

Description: Over 40 fabulous rabbis, scholars, and teachers from across the spectrum of the greater Seattle Jewish community will offer their perspectives on Judaism, ethics and human relationships.

What: The Colors of Jews

Who: Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz

When: October 28th: 5-6pm

Where: Richard Hugo House

Cost: $10

STARS/Clock Hours: 1    

Description: This presentation focuses on Kaye/Kantrowitz’s book, The Colors of Jews (IU Press) and examines the historical and contemporary views on Jews and whiteness. Kaye/Kantrowitz argues that Jews are an increasingly multiracial people; a fact that, if embraced, could help combat racism.

Instructor Bio: Kaye/Kantrowitz is a feminist scholar and poet. She is currently Adjunct Professor in Comparative Literature at Queens College/CUNY.

Description: Dr. Wendy Mogel (The Blessing of a Skinned Knee) is a nationally known clinical psychologist, parent educator and school consultant.  Her work focuses on helping parents raise optimistic, compassionate, and resourceful children.  Dr. Mogel applies traditional teachings and thought to today’s parenting dilemmas and helps parents learn how to turn their children’s most challenging traits into their greatest attributes.

Description: This seminar for educators includes an overview of the Holocaust, a survivor’s story, information on ghettos and camps, memorials of genocide and guidelines for teaching the Holocaust.

Description: Learn about the connection between Jews and the diamond industry.  How did Jews and diamonds become so entwined that in Antwerp the most popular expressions in the industry are “mazel” and ”nu?” Sorry, this class does not offer free samples.

Instructor Bio: Bob Herschkowitz is the grandson, son, brother, and husband of diamond dealers.

Description: Discover the wisdom, insights, customs, legends, and stories of this ancient text that still speak to us today.

Instructor Bio: Rabbi Yechezkel Kornfeld is a leading Seattle Jewish Educator and a recipient of the Samis Excellence in Education Award. He serves as the spiritual leader of Congregation Shevet Achim on Mercer Island and is the Director of Adult Education of the Central Organization for Jewish Education for Chabad-Lubavitch.
