GOVERNMENT
AFFAIRS NEWS Every year the Jewish Federation
meets with its social service beneficiary agencies and the
Anti-Defamation League to develop a joint State legislative agenda.
The Government Affairs Program presents this agenda to the
Washington State legislature when it convenes in January. Part of
the Community Development Department, the program maintains a
full-time presence in Olympia during the state legislative session.
Among the issues we will advocate for are: Funding for Refugees
served by Jewish Family Service, Maintaining funding for Kline
Galland Home, and Legislation protecting agencies from having their
property insurance canceled because of hate crimes. Preliminary 2003 Legislative
Agenda.

: COUNCIL HOUSE SHABBAT IS
SPECIAL Between the
tablecloths, the gefilte fish, and the wine, Morris Sharlup is a
happy man. For Sharlup, a small but stocky gentleman with a
gray-streaked ponytail and a welcoming smile under his grizzled
beard, Friday nights at the Council House retirement community have
been more meaningful than in years past. Since last September, he
has partaken in a Shabbat dinner program made possible by a grant
from the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle.
The meal, served in two
seatings, consists of several courses with a wait staff and more
care given to the table settings. Wine and challah are also served.

COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL OF JEWISH STUDIES
NEWS The Community High School of Jewish
Studies opened its doors October 2nd to a new group of 175 high
schoolers. Our year has gotten off to a terrific start with so many
9th graders that we had to add another section of our new 9th grade
seminar—“Getting Acquainted with Judaism and Ourselves” –a class
that explores Jewish identity and the common threads running through
our diverse Jewish community, while emphasizing the building of
relationships within our 9th grade classes. Our teachers and classes
represent the spectrum of beliefs and practices within our community
with classes covering topics such as the arts, medical ethics,
history, humor and politics from a Jewish perspective as well as
classes that focus on biblical texts and Jewish holidays.
