The Maimonides Society of Washington State strengthens relationships among Jewish physicians, medical professionals and dentists through leadership, tikkun olam and professional development opportunities. The Maimonides Society's social, educational and philanthropic programming integrates medical and Jewish concerns to demonstrate the unique contributions the health professions can make to support the Jewish community. Participation is open to all Jewish physicians and dentists.

2012 Annual Meeting Awardees Announced

Annual Meeting

The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle will recognize the achievements of four exceptional community volunteers at its 2012 Annual Meeting on June 21, 2012 at the Seattle Asian Art Museum. Corey Salka, chair of the Federation's Center for Jewish Philanthropy, will accept the Dr. Charles and Lillian Kaplan Board Chair's Award; Kim Fisher and Zane Brown, Jr. will receive the Jack J. and Charlotte Spitzer Young Leadership Awards; and the Pamela Waechter Jewish Communal Professional Award will be given to Marcie Wirth, Special Events Manager at the Stroum Jewish Community Center.

Professionals Reception: Bulgarian Neuro-Ophthalmologist Revives Jewish Community

Dr. Alexander Oscar, President of Sofia's Jewish Community, will deliver a special presentation on The Rebirth of Bulgaria's Jewish Community: How a Neuro-Ophthalmologist from Sofia is Leading a Jewish Renaissance,  on March 5, 2012, sponsored by the Maimonides Society of Washington State.

Dr. Oscar's first contact with the re-born Jewish community in Bulgaria was in 1991 when he committed himself to helping this small but spirited Jewish community to assist its needy elderly, reclaim its Sephardic Jewish heritage, and rebuild Jewish communal life.

Dr. Michael Spektor Named President of Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity

Congratulations to Past Board Chair Dr. Michael Spektor who was named President Elect of the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity, the oldest international dental organization in the world.

Founded in 1907, ΑΩ is committed to social justice, philanthropy and upholding Jewish values across the globe. Among its many achievements, ΑΩ is responsible for having helped to form Israel's two major dental schools. The Jewish Federation shares many of the values of ΑΩ, as Dr. Spektor noted in his acceptance speech:

Bulgarian Jewish Community Leader Dr. Alexander Oscar to Speak at Maimonides Reception

Dr. Alexander Oscar

Dr. Alexander Oscar is the President of Sofia Jewish Community, Vice President of Bulgaria Jewish Community, and Vice President of European Council of Jewish Communities, and will be making a special presentation at the Maimonides Society Reception on March 5, 2012.

After the fall of Communism in Bulgaria, and throughout Central and Eastern Europe, an opportunity to rebuild Jewish life was created.

Giving

While no minimum gift to the Jewish Federation is required to participate in Maimonides Society activities, those who make annual Community Campaign gifts of $180 or more will be listed as members of the Maimonides Society, and those who give $1,800 or more to the Community Campaign recognized as members of the Maimonides Honor Society.
