$65,000 in Economic Impact Grants Announced for Jewish Family Service, Jewish Day Schools

Today, we are pleased to announce $65,000 in grants to six local Jewish organizations in the greater Seattle area. The Challenging Times Economic Impact Grants were created to help local Jewish organizations meet growing needs for services and scholarships due to the economic downturn.

The largest grant recipient is Jewish Family Service who received $39,000 for Safety Net-related needs: $10,000 for Aging and Adult Programs, $10,000 for Emergency Services, $10,000 for the Food Bank and $9,000 for the Seattle Association for Jews with Disabilities.

Spring into Leadership: Apply Now!

SpringBoard

Ever wondered how to get on a board of a Jewish organization? How the Jewish community shaped Seattle’s history? Or how the next generation is changing the world? Then register for Young Leadership’s SpringBoard Leadership Series—engaging and training young adults for volunteerism and leadership in the Jewish community.

Springboard sessions take place the second Thursday of each month, except for our first session on Sunday, October 18, which includes a tour of Jewish Seattle.

Story of Impact: Camp Made Possible

In 2009, the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle gave $67,369.50 to 148 campers. Here is a letter from the mother of one of the 148 campers about the difference it has made.

“I will never forget the first year I applied for a scholarship and you called and told me you were going to pay the entire tuition even though I had asked for less. It blew me away. And it continues to every year. The Federation has made such a huge difference in Deborah’s* life by making camp possible for her. She is SO committed to Judaism and Israel because of her experiences at YJ.

Story of Impact: Zara Friedman’s Israel

21-year old Zara Friedman loved teaching, but wanted an international Jewish experience. With the help of the Jewish Federation, she traveled and lived in Israel on Otzma—a program where young Jewish adults spend and year volunteering and traveling around Israel.

When recounting her experiences, Zara often speaks of her time in Israel on the Otzma program in the context of a children’s story. Her protagonists, 53 young Jewish adults from Jewish Federations all over America, set off in September 2008 for a ten and a half month stay in Israel.

Helping You Connect

New to Seattle or YLD? Come have coffee with one of our kind souls from the Welcoming Committee! We know that it can be hard to go to an event or a meeting if you don't know anyone, so this is a perfect opportunity to get to know a friendly face.

The Welcoming Committee is here to make sure everyone looking to connect to the Seattle Jewish community is able to find their place. We can tell you more about the Jewish Federation, YLD and other local Jewish young-adult activities.

If you want to set up a coffee date, send an email to YLD Director Cameron Levin at CameronL@JewishInSeattle.org with “Coffee Date” in the subject line and tell us a little bit about yourself. We look forward to meeting you!

Giving

Members who give $1,000 or more to the Community Campaign join the Ben-Gurion Society.

Sports For All

Koren

Meet Koren, an Israeli-Ethiopian immigrant who is learning to play soccer for the first time.

Sports leagues did not exist before Sports for All was launched in Fall 2007 with funds from our Jewish Federation’s Community Campaign.

When you are living with constant air-raid sirens and fear, like Koren and other Israeli children, this outlet becomes all that more important. Your patronage through YLD supports youth programs like this.

Now, kids come together to play, let off steam and build cross-cultural connections and self-esteem.

Lend your support and make a donation today.
