Volunteer Spotlight: Mishala Horowitz

Mishala took her first dive into volunteering with the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle at Connections 2011, the annual signature outreach and fundraising event for Jewish women in the greater Seattle area, on January 30 and loved it. She was impressed by the impact of the causes the event supported and the importance of philanthropy. Currently a junior at Skyline High School, Mishala is active in BBYO.

Volunteer Spotlight: Sidell Family

Carol Sidell and her two daughters Joanna Sandorffy and Sarah Walton are the phenomenal co-chairs of this year's Connections brunch on January 30. This philanthropic family is working together to organize the Jewish Federation's signature and ever-popular women's outreach and fundraising event, and their book-loving ways have made for a brunch around books.

Volunteer Spotlight: Ben Meyerhoff

Ben Meyerhoff was not looking to volunteer; he was looking for a job. When the economy collapsed and unemployment skyrocketed, Ben found himself among the many job-seekers in our community. His personal experiences looking for a job during hard economic times inspired him to create the Greater Seattle Jewish Business Network, a group on the professional networking website, LinkedIn. The GSJBN was founded on the idea that the connections and strength that we derive from being a part of the Jewish community can be a valuable resource for job-seekers.

Volunteer Spotlight: Annual Meeting Awardees

This month, we are focusing our spotlight on four incredibly deserving volunteers who are being recognized at our annual meeting on June 24: Jack Almo, Andrew Cohen, Alexa Huggins and Rivy Poupko Kletenik.

Volunteer Spotlight: Brandon Nudelman

Having Brandon Nudelman, the philanthopy chair of University of Washington’s only Jewish fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi, as a volunteer is a feather in our cap. The Jewish Federation has been lucky enough to have Brandon and his AEPi brothers recently serve as chaperones for J-Serve, the national day of service for Jewish teens, and volunteer at the Jewish Federation’s Super Sunday phone-a-thon.

Volunteer Spotlight: Lilly DeJaen

Lilly DeJaen has volunteered almost her whole life. Without putting a number to it, that is a lot of volunteering. She fondly recalls some of her first volunteer activities with the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, as the chair of the Women's Campaign "G-Day" or Gift Day at the Olympic Hotel in 1964.

Volunteer Spotlight: David Goldfarb

With a long history of Jewish influence in his life, it only made sense for David Goldfarb to turn to the Jewish Federation as a resource for volunteering in the community. Solomon Schechter, USY, a "phenomenal" trip to Israel, and parents heavily involved in their own Jewish community in Florida: all these things create a recipe for someone engaged with the Jewish community for life.

Volunteer Spotlight: Nadia Hecker-O'Brien

Amidst tutoring, soccer and the otherwise busy life of an active teen, Nadia Hecker-O'Brien also manages to find time to be the regional president of Seattle's BBYO organization—and a volunteer at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle. Currently a senior at Garfield High School, Nadia lives with her family in the Leschi/Madrona area.

Volunteer Spotlight: Talya Jeffries

After serving on the Jewish Federation’s Early Childhood Engagement Implementation Committee, Talya, a Ravenna mother of two and home-maker with a master’s degree in social work and Jewish communal service, was asked to chair the Hanukkah Pajama Jam event for young families.
