Sample bequest language is "I, give, devise and bequeath to the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle [dollar amount or percentage of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted use and purpose."
A bequest is a smart way to make a gift given the economic times – one larger than you might have thought possible. By designating a specific sum or a percentage of your estate for the Jewish community through the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, you can make a major difference, even if you can’t commit any assets today.
Your bequest to the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle will be recognized as part of our Legacy Society.
Below are some types of charitable bequests that might fit your needs.
Unrestricted bequest: This is a gift for general purposes, to be used at the discretion of our governing board. A gift like this—without conditions attached—is frequently the most useful, as it allows the Jewish Federation to determine the wisest and most pressing need.
Residuary bequest: This is a gift of all the "rest, residue and remainder" of your estate after all other bequests, debts and taxes have been paid.
Restricted bequest: This type of gift allows you to specify how the funds are to be used. It's best, however, to consult the Jewish Federation when you make your will to be certain your intent can be fulfilled.
Endowed bequest: This bequest allows you to restrict the principal of your gift, requiring us to hold the funds permanently and use only a small percentage or the income they generate. Creating an endowment in this manner means that your gift can continue giving indefinitely.
Contingent bequest: This bequest allows you to provide that the money, property or share is to go to some individual if that person survives you; otherwise, it's to be distributed to us.
