A Note from Richard: JFS Dedicates Renovated Food Bank

Congratulations to Jewish Family Service, who on Sunday, March 7, dedicated their recently renovated food bank on Capitol Hill. The expansion, funded by a $500,000 federal stimulus package grant, allows JFS to grow its neighborhood food bank to serve low-income families and seniors of all backgrounds more thoroughly from Downtown Seattle to the Madison Valley. Additionally, the expansion will increase the capacity of JFS to store and deliver food by as much as 100%, reducing or eliminating the current need for off-site warehousing and related transportation costs.

Their Stories Live On: Yom HaZikaron

This year for Yom HaZikaron, Israel's official Day of Remembrance, the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle is putting together a special exhibit to honor the memories of those killed in wars and acts of terrorism. Through photographs, stories and mementos, we invite you to connect on a personal level to just a few of the thousands of fallen men, women and children whose names are remembered each year in Israel on Yom HaZikaron. Find the stories at www.JewishInSeattle.org/YomHazikaron. You can view our exhibit at the following venues:

Story of Impact: Nodari

When war erupted last year in South Ossetia, between Russia and Georgia, thousands of Georgians were displaced. Among them was Nodari Putkaradze, a doctor whose family had been living in Gori for generations.

Nodari and his wife and daughter were at home one afternoon when they heard an explosion. Suddenly, their balcony came crashing into the living room. The walls shook, the floor trembled, and the house began to collapse around them. They barely escaped, crawling out through a shower of glass and plaster. But as they ran to shelter in a nearby garage, a bomb landed close enough to throw Nodari against a wall and critically injure him.
