Cardozo Society Immigration Pro Bono Project

February 10, 2011 12:00 PM

The Cardozo Society of Washington State is pleased to announce a new pro bono initiative in partnership with the Northwest Immigrants Rights Project (NWIRP). We are recruiting lawyers to join us in a coordinated effort to represent immigrants seeking political asylum in the United States. Asylum cases typically require approximately 20 to 30 hours of legal work over the course of the case. Most cases take several months from start to finish. Very little training is required to do this work and it is completely irrelevant what your normal practice area is.

Please join us for lunch and an informal discussion with NWIRP pro bono coordinating attorney, Jordan Wasserman on February 10 at 12pm at the offices of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle.

Mr. Wasserman will explain the nuts and bolts of handling an asylum case. After your questions have been answered you will have an opportunity to sign up for the list of lawyers available to take asylum cases. You do not have to sign up for this list. There is also no obligation to take a case at any time, even after NWIRP contacts you about a specific client seeking representation. All participating Cardozo Society members will be recognized at our annual L'Dor v'Dor event.

We hope you can join other Cardozo Society lawyers who have already agreed to work with NWIRP on this important project. Feel free to join us for lunch just to learn about this project, even if you think you cannot ultimately take an asylum case at this time. Please RSVP to Cameron Levin at CameronL [at] JewishInSeattle [dot] org if you are interested in joining us for lunch.

If you have any questions about this project, please feel free to contact Aaron Kiviat at 206 467-3190 or Daniel Swedlow at 206 441-4860 x1244.
