Cardozo Society Lecture: the Legal Struggle for an Inclusive Israel
Meet up-and-coming civil rights attorney Ruth Carmi. Ruth will lead an in-depth discussion of her work defending the civil rights of Israel's Arab minority at the Legal and Public Policy Department of the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC), the legal arm of the Reform Movement in Israel. She will also discuss the rights of women in Israel through the lens of her research on gender segregation in Israeli public space and her role as legal advisor for Jerusalem's Rape Crisis Center, where she has been a volunteer for seven years.
The lecture will meet at the law offices of Garvey Schubert Barer in downtown Seattle. A light lunch will be provided.

NIF's Israel–US Civil Liberties Law Program has provided academic and professional experience to Israeli lawyers specializing in civil rights for 27 years. Fellows spend one year at American University's Washington College of Law, intern at an American public-interest legal organization, and spend a second year working with an NIF grantee in Israel. The over 50 program graduates form the core of the civil rights bar in Israel. Graduates of the program have successfully argued the cases that have shaped the course of Israeli legislation in the areas of human rights, disabilities, religious freedom, pluralism, and environmental law.
The New Israel Fund is the leading organization committed to equality and democracy for all Israelis. Widely credited with building Israel's progressive civil society from scratch, we have provided more than $200 million to more than 800 cutting-edge organizations since 1979. Through our action arm, SHATIL, we mentor, train and lead Israeli civil society in an ongoing struggle to empower the underprivileged.
