Regarding the May 31 Flotillas Attempting to Break the Israeli Naval Blockade of the Gaza Strip
We regret the loss of life and the injuries to both civilians and soldiers.
Israel provides 15,000 tons of humanitarian aid to Gaza each week. The stopping of six ships attempting to reach Gaza was not to prevent aid from reaching the people of Gaza. It was a security check required of all ships entering Israel’s waters.
The government of Israel offered safe delivery of the stated humanitarian aid on the six ships attempting to make a delivery to the Gaza Strip. Five ships accepted the offer and request to divert to Ashdod. This aid has since been delivered to Gaza. The sixth ship did not agree to the request.
When Israeli naval personnel boarded the ship, they were attacked using lethal force by armed individuals. The Israelis responded to the immediate threat on their lives.
Rockets, mortar shells, and bullets smuggled into Gaza are used to kill and injure Israeli civilians. The people of Israel have suffered from these constant attacks from terrorists in Gaza, including one just last week. The Israeli blockade is geared to stop ships and other vehicles from delivering weapons there. Israel has the right to defend herself and her borders.
All those injured were immediately treated at Israeli hospitals and all civilians have been released to their home countries, without any charges being filed.
The Jewish Federation mourns the loss of all life, Israelis, Palestinians, and other caring people. The only way toward peace and an end to this conflict is for Palestinians and Israelis to join together in meaningful peace negotiations.
