Following the Senate’s lead, the Washington House released its proposed 2013-2015 state budget last week. The differences between the two proposals will have very real consequences for Washington families struggling to find work and stay afloat in the aftermath of the Great Recession. The House included programs that help disabled adults, invested more in Washington’s WorkFirst program and in other programs that help families rise out of poverty, and made investments in housing and support for the homeless. The Senate did not include these programs in its budget.

As leaders in the Senate promised, more money has been provided for schools and higher education. These investments will help make our state more competitive by meeting our education needs. However, this positive step doesn’t tell the whole story.
» Read MoreOn Wednesday, the Department of Revenue released the latest quarterly revenue forecast for the state. As expected, the forecast showed a widening deficit -- $400 million more. This decline in revenues is the result of soft revenue and federal sequester cuts, which Washington State must now absorb. The revenue decline worsens a deficit that is now approaching $1.3 billion.
