Seattle Educators Learn Theater Techniques for the Classroom Posted on March 14, 2012 9:13 AM

Jewish educators participated in dramatic professional development session on March 12. Facilitated by theater expert Joyce Klein, teachers gained new insights about how to incorporate stage techniques into their classrooms for an interdisciplinary, active learning experience. Education Services sponsored the session, which was held at Seattle Hebrew Academy.

Rocket Barrage Eases in Southern Israel Posted on March 13, 2012 3:50 PM

After five days of rocket fire from Gaza into Southern Israel, the attacks have begun to subside and Israelis expect to return to normal life in the coming days. Since Friday, when Israel Defense Forces assassinated two major terrorists, more than 200 rockets have been fired into Israel's south, threatening more than 1 million people.

Southern Israel Update Posted on March 13, 2012 9:09 AM

Israel's south remained under fire for a fifth day, with over 222 rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. A ceasefire brokered by Egypt, which rolled into effect over the course of Tuesday morning, still saw some additional strikes in the early hours of the day. The IDF Chief of Staff was quoted as saying: "We are still following the situation in the south and we need to see how it develops and whether the (rocket) firing really stops. It's not over until it's over.

Action Center Update: New Budget Passed by State Senate Posted on March 5, 2012 5:29 PM

Late Friday, as the Washington State Senate was wrapping up their work before cut-off, a coalition of Republican and Democratic senators broke ranks to use parliamentary tricks to bring a new budget for a vote in the State Senate. This was done without a hearing and with only a handful of senators having read and been briefed on the details of the bill.

The new budget brought to the floor eliminated Washington's Disability Lifeline program, hammered Washington's Work First program, eliminated family planning services, and cut education spending. The House budget and the budget written by Ways and Means Chair Ed Murray maintained these vital programs.

Israel unveils sophisticated shelters in Tel Aviv: Seattle Times Posted on March 2, 2012 9:57 AM

Underneath the plaza outside Israel's Habima national theater, Israel has put the finishing touches on a new gathering place that it hopes will never host a crowd: the country's most advanced public underground bomb shelter.

The shelter, four stories underground and with space for 1,600 people, is usually a parking lot. It is also part of Tel Aviv's elaborate civil defense infrastructure. City officials have been beefing up shelters and emergency services in recent months at a time of rising tensions with Iran and militant groups in the Gaza Strip.
