Our Jewish Values
"When you are asked in the world to come, 'What was your work?' and you answer: 'I fed the hungry,' you will be told: 'This is the gate of the Lord, enter into it, you who have fed the hungry."
(Midrash to Psalm 118:17)
Washington ranks 45th in the nation in getting breakfast to low-income students.
Why? Many kids are unable to get to school in time to eat breakfast or are embarrassed by the social stigmas and peer pressure.
Breakfast After the Bell is a smart solution. It removes these barriers by allowing schools to offer every child a quick, easy, nutritious breakfast after the bell - just like lunch. The bill gives schools flexibility to do this in whatever way works for their students!
Schools across the country see the positive impacts of implementing breakfast after the bell - fewer disciplinary incidents, better attendance, and improved test scores.
One in five kids in Washington's schools suffers from hunger. They can't wait. It's time to make breakfast part of the school day - just like lunch -and ensure all our children have the physical strength to learn and thrive. It's time pass Breakfast After the Bell. You can help!
Hungry Students Can't Learn
"From Pullman to Ellensburg to Vancouver, hunger is a legacy of the Great Recession in our state. It is especially evident in schools where three out of four public-school teachers say that students regularly come to school hungry. Hungry students struggle to concentrate and face greater barriers to educational success ... Unlike many partisan issues, this is a simple solution with which we should all agree." - Seattle Times Op-Ed
Take a Leap of Action
Hungry kids shouldn't be held hostage because of our failure to act. Take a Leap of Action. Email your legislators and ask them to request that Senators Hans Zeiger and Joe Fain hold a hearing for SB 5696, Breakfast After the Bell. All our children deserve the strength to succeed in school and in life!
