SUMMARY:Seattle Jewish Film Festival: ZELENSKY
DESCRIPTION:President Volodymyr Zelensky (one of only three Jewish world leaders) has become the iconic symbol of Ukraine. His choice to remain in the country when the Russians invaded in 2022 changed the expected course of the conflict. Codirected by documentary filmmaker Yves Jeuland\, French journalist Ariane Chemin and historian Lisa Vapné\, ZELENSKY provides rare access to archival photos and video footage\, plus interviews with people who have known\, worked and performed with Zelensky throughout his kaleidoscopic life and colorful careers. \n\n\n\nGrowing up in 1980s Ukraine\, young Zelensky (a hyperactive kid) was indoctrinated by his Soviet communist education—an unusual background given his resistance to Russia now—but then he discovered performing\, traveling throughout Russia in a comedy troupe before returning to Kyiv to as a successful entertainer. \n\n\n\nThrough astonishing footage and candid interviews\, including with Zelensky himself\, ZELENSKY lays out the path of his double metamorphosis: shedding both his communist and comedy backgrounds to become the president of independent Ukraine. The synergistic partnership of a filmmaker\, journalist and historian yields a not-to-be-missed portrait of an often-seen but barely known public figure ubiquitous on the world stage. \n\n\n\nDirector Bio: View on IMDB (Jeuland/Chemin/Vapné) \n\n\n\nYves Jeuland is a French documentary filmmaker and creator of numerous television films about politics and prominent public figures. \n\n\n\nAriane Chemin is a journalist who has been writing for the daily newspaper “Le Monde” since 2011. \n\n\n\nLisa Vapné works as a historian specializing in Eastern European history. \n\n\n\nSponsor: Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle

SUMMARY:Stories That Shaped a Nation: Weaving Jewish Voices Into American History Webinar
DESCRIPTION:In the last decade\, incidents of anti-Jewish harm have increased nearly 900% in the U.S. Unfortunately\, K-12 schools have not been exempt from this. Students as young as seven have been harassed\, bullied\, and intimidated because of their Jewish identity. There has not been any curriculum available to teach American students about who Jews are – until now.  \n\n\n\nJoin the Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council and the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History for a virtual presentation about their new curriculum\, Stories That Shaped a Nation: Jewish Lives in America.  \n\n\n\nYou will learn how this curriculum challenges antisemitism and brings the civic\, artistic\, and cultural dimensions of Jewish peoplehood into classrooms across Washington State and the nation. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is for anyone who cares about the safety and belonging of Jewish students. Even if you are not an educator or a parent\, we invite you to join us for this inspiring virtual learning session!
