The data shows a rich diversity of viewpoints within our Jewish community, particularly on issues that can feel divisive, such as Israel. While public discourse can often amplify a perception of a deep divide and polarization in our society, the findings tell a more nuanced story about our Seattle Jewish community.

It’s not easy to help people remain connected despite disagreement. We invite institutions to consider establishing norms for civil dialogue, supporting thoughtful facilitation, and cultivating an environment where our relationships to each other and our community are more important than winning the argument. Creating opportunities for relationship-building across differences can help sustain Jewish life in Seattle.

Similar JFNA surveys have been rolled out in dozens of Jewish communities across the country in the last two years, allowing us to compare Seattle to cities of the same size and on the West Coast. The data shows that our Jewish community is not dramatically different from the national averages on most questions.

There is a certain streak of independence that comes with living in the Pacific Northwest; however, Seattle Jews also have a lot in common with other communities. This finding presents an opportunity for Jewish organizations to collaborate and learn from Jewish communities on how to best engage Jewish Seattlelites.
