A Note from Solly Kane

Reflections from Federation’s President & CEO

July 18, 2025

Dear Seattle Community,

Last week, I shared news about our local cohort of the National Young Leadership Cabinet as part of our efforts to invest in a strong pipeline of leaders for our community. Continuing our work investing in our community’s current and future leaders, this week we kicked off our new cohort of the Francine R. Loeb Leadership Institute (LLI)!

LLI honors the legacy of Francine R. “Frankie” Loeb, a beloved community leader and the Federation’s first female Board Chair. Our 2025-2026 cohort of 17 outstanding LLI fellows will spend the next year learning about what communal leadership means in the Jewish community. They will each serve in an ex-officio capacity on a local Jewish organization’s board, participate in leadership laps, and receive coaching and mentorship on their leadership journey. Meet our new cohort and learn more about these emerging leaders!

This program is valuable for our community in many ways. At the Federation, we want a thriving Jewish community with strong leaders at all of our communal institutions, and we invest in that pipeline for the community. In addition to that, I strongly believe that Jewish communal leadership is a “team sport,” and part of the intention of this program is to build strong cohorts and develop leaders who are networked with each other for years to come.

Our most recent shinshinim, Ashira Chasen and Eliya Hovav, are now returning to Israel after spending a year immersed in Jewish life across Puget Sound. They have spent time at local day schools, synagogues, and communal events, sharing about themselves and the complexity of being an Israeli in today’s world. You can learn more about their experience as powerful role models in The Cholent article.

I shared last week that we joined Jewish Federations of North America and urged the National Education Association (NEA) to reject a resolution boycotting the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). You can read the final version of that Jewish communal letter to NEA President Becky Pringle expressing our concerns about the rising antisemitism in teachers’ unions. If you haven’t yet, you can add your voice now

Thank you for being part of our work.

Shabbat shalom,
